Despite the fact that India is a vegetarian's paradise-->30% of the country is vegetarian--and a locavore's dream-- >90% of even consumed meat is sourced locally, India has serious issues with healthy eating (and I'm not just talking about Delhi Belly here!).
43% of Indian children under 5 are malnourished (compare to ~35% in Sub-Saharan Africa) but at the same time 19% of the population is overweight (this stat, I bet, would be MUCH higher for Mumbai).
In fact, I've seen more plus-size clothing purveyors in South Mumbai than in Wisconsin--that's saying something! Below is an ad from a famous plus-size line chain, ALL-- "A Little Larger":
Granted some of this genetic, but a lot of it also has to do with diet and behavior: high white rice/carb consumption among poor and simple overconsumption among the wealthy.
